Save the Turtles

In Ingham County, Michigan, a protected Blanding's turtle we named Blandy makes her home in our pond.
Our journey began when we discovered Blandy nesting on our property. We reported her sighting to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for official identification—their verification is publicly accessible through our state's Herp Atlas (view record).
That encounter sparked unexpected curiosity. Prior to meeting our small resident, turtles rarely caught my attention. But as I began researching, I uncovered the fascinating biology and critical conservation needs of this species.
This site shares what I've learned—from Blandy's daily life to the broader importance of protecting Blanding's Turtles and the fragile ecosystems they depend on. Join us in celebrating and safeguarding one of nature's most remarkable survivors.
"There's a special kind of freedom in carrying your house wherever you go" -Blandy the Turtle
.
Blanding's Turtles are considered an indicator species—their presence signals a healthy, intact wetland ecosystem. Their extreme longevity and late maturity mean population recovery is painfully slow, making every individual—including Blandy—critically important.
